Simply put it acts as a storage center for red blood cells in case of emergency & filters out old & damaged RBC's then recycles components like iron & hemoglobin that are returned to the bone marrow & the circulatory system to create new & healthy blood. Also the spleen works in conjunction with the lymph nodes to produce lymphocytes to fight off bacteria & viruses..
